Your options

  • Pay in full now. The cheapest option, because interest and late-payment penalties stop.
  • Short-term payment plan. Up to 180 days to pay in full, with no setup fee, though interest continues.
  • Long-term installment agreement. Monthly payments for individuals who owe up to the IRS online limit (currently $50,000 in combined tax, penalties and interest). Direct debit plans have the lowest setup fee.
  • Other options. If you truly can't pay, the IRS has other programs, such as currently-not-collectible status or an offer in compromise. Those require representation Iris refers to an enrolled agent or tax attorney.

A typical example

An illustrative example, not a client testimonial. A Clearwater contractor owes $9,400 after a good year without estimated payments. He can't pay it all at once.

Iris checks that all his returns are filed and the balance is right, then sits with him while he applies for a long-term installment agreement in his IRS online account, choosing direct debit for the lowest setup fee. She also sets up estimated payments for this year so the balance doesn't grow.

What the IRS requires first

Before approving a plan, the IRS expects every required tax return to be filed. If you have unfiled years, Iris prepares those first. She also checks the balance against your records, because a payment applied to the wrong year or a missing deduction can change what you owe. More help is on our IRS notice help in Clearwater page.

What Tax Link can and can't do

Iris helps you understand the notice and prepare a response that you sign and submit. Tax Link is not a law firm or CPA firm and does not represent clients in IRS collections, appeals or audits beyond what IRS rules allow for tax return preparers. For complex cases, Iris refers you to an enrolled agent, CPA or tax attorney.

How it works

  1. Call 678-614-4636 and read Iris the notice number and response date from the letter.
  2. She meets you at home, reads the full letter with you and compares it to your return and records.
  3. Together you prepare the response or request, which you sign and send by the date on the letter. Iris keeps a copy for follow-up.

What it costs

Payment plan help is [payment plan help price], plus any IRS setup fee, which you pay directly to the IRS.

Iris's promises to you

Inviting someone into your home or business takes trust. Here is what Iris promises every client:

  • Your documents never leave your sight. She scans what she needs at your table, works on an encrypted laptop and hands your originals back before she leaves.
  • Every line is explained in your language. Plain English or Spanish, so you know exactly what you signed.
  • No waiting room, ever. She comes to your home or business at the time you choose, Monday to Saturday from 8 to 6.
  • If the IRS writes later, she reads it with you. The same woman-owned business that did the work answers the follow-up.

Questions people ask before they call

Will a payment plan stop IRS letters?

Once a plan is approved and you keep up with payments and future filings, collection letters stop.

Does interest keep growing?

Yes. Interest and a reduced late-payment penalty continue until the balance is paid, so paying extra when you can saves money.

Can I set it up myself?

Yes, through the IRS Online Payment Agreement tool. Iris can sit with you while you do it and make sure you choose the right plan.

What if I miss a payment?

Contact the IRS right away. Missing payments can cancel the plan. Iris can help you request a change if your income dropped.

Will this hurt my credit?

An installment agreement itself is not reported to credit bureaus. A federal tax lien can be filed in some cases, which is one more reason to act early.
