Never sure how much to send the IRS each quarter?
Quarterly Estimated Tax Help in Clearwater
If no one withholds tax from your income, the IRS expects you to pay during the year. Pay too little and you get a penalty; pay too much and your money sits idle. Iris calculates the right amounts and dates for you. Call 678-614-4636.

Who needs to pay estimates
- Contractors, freelancers, gig workers and other 1099 earners
- Small business owners whose profit passes through to their personal return
- Landlords with rental profit
- Retirees taking IRA or 401(k) withdrawals without enough withholding
- Anyone with large investment gains, interest or dividends
Generally, you need to make estimated payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file.
A typical example
An illustrative example, not a client testimonial. A Clearwater real estate agent had a strong spring and a slow summer. Her flat quarterly payments were too high for the second half of the year.
In August, Iris recalculates using the safe harbor based on last year's tax and lowers the September and January payments, freeing up cash for her slow months without risking a penalty.

The four due dates
- April 15 for income earned January through March
- June 15 for April and May
- September 15 for June through August
- January 15 of the next year for September through December
When a date falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day. IRS disaster postponements can also move these dates for Pinellas County.
Safe harbors that prevent penalties
You generally avoid the underpayment penalty if you pay at least 90 percent of this year's tax, or 100 percent of last year's tax (110 percent if your income was over $150,000). Iris picks the approach that keeps your payments lowest without a penalty. For more planning help see our tax consultant in Clearwater page.

Questions people ask before they call
How do I pay estimated taxes?
Through your IRS online account, IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS. Paying by check with Form 1040-ES vouchers also works.
Can I pay all four at once?
Yes. Paying early is fine. Paying late is what brings the penalty.
Does Florida require estimated payments?
Not for individuals, because Florida has no personal income tax.
I missed a payment. What now?
Make it as soon as you can. The penalty is based on how late and how much, so paying sooner keeps it small.
Can I raise my W-2 withholding instead?
Yes. If you or your spouse has a job, increasing withholding can replace estimates, and it counts as paid evenly through the year.
Should I pay estimates if I'm retired?
If your pension and IRA withdrawals don't have enough tax withheld, yes. Another option is asking the plan to withhold more, which Iris can calculate.
What if my income drops mid-year?
You can lower or skip later payments. Iris recalculates so you pay enough to avoid a penalty and no more.
