When you should amend

  • You received a W-2 or 1099 after you filed
  • You missed a credit, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit or an education credit
  • You used the wrong filing status or claimed the wrong dependents
  • Your Marketplace health insurance form (1095-A) was corrected
  • You discovered unclaimed business expenses or depreciation

You usually don't need to amend for math errors, which the IRS corrects, or for a missing schedule the IRS asks you to mail.

A typical example

An illustrative example, not a client testimonial. A nurse in Safety Harbor filed in February, then received a corrected W-2 from a second hospital job in March. Rather than wait for an IRS notice, she calls Iris.

Iris compares the two W-2s, prepares a Form 1040-X showing the added income and withholding, and finds that the extra withholding nearly covers the added tax. The amendment is e-filed the same afternoon, and the small balance is paid online before interest builds.

Time limits to know

To claim a refund, you generally must file an amended return within three years of filing the original return, or within two years of paying the tax, whichever is later.

If you owe more, amending quickly limits interest and penalties. Iris checks whether an IRS notice is already on the way, because the right fix depends on it. Learn more on our tax preparation page.

How it works

  1. Call 678-614-4636 and tell Iris what kind of return you have. She'll tell you what to gather and quote the price.
  2. Iris comes to your home or business, reviews your documents with you and asks about anything that changed this year.
  3. She prepares the return, walks you through the result, and e-files after you approve and sign. You keep a copy.

What it costs

Amended returns start at [amended return starting price]. If Iris prepared your original return and made an error, she corrects it at no charge.

Iris's promises to you

Inviting someone into your home or business takes trust. Here is what Iris promises every client:

  • You know the price before she starts. No surprise fees at the end.
  • Your documents never leave your sight. She scans what she needs at your table, works on an encrypted laptop and hands your originals back before she leaves.
  • Every line is explained in your language. Plain English or Spanish, so you know exactly what you signed.
  • No waiting room, ever. She comes to your home or business at the time you choose, Monday to Saturday from 8 to 6.
  • If the IRS writes later, she reads it with you. The same woman-owned business that did the work answers the follow-up.

Questions people ask before they call

Can amended returns be e-filed?

Yes, for recent tax years when the original was e-filed. Older years are amended on paper.

How long does an amended return take to process?

The IRS says amended returns can take 16 weeks or longer. You can track the status with the IRS "Where's My Amended Return?" tool.

Will amending trigger an audit?

No. Correcting a return is normal. It is better than having the IRS find the issue first.

Someone else did my original return. Can you amend it?

Yes. Bring a copy of the original return and the new information.

Do I need to amend a Florida return?

No, Florida has no personal income tax. If the change affects another state's return, Iris amends that one too.

Can I amend to add a dependent I forgot?

Yes, if the dependent qualifies. Iris checks that no one else claimed them, because two returns claiming the same child will bring an IRS letter.

Will I owe interest if the amendment shows a balance?

Yes, interest runs from the original due date, which is why amending quickly saves money. Iris shows you the amount before you file.

Can I amend an amended return?

Yes, if something else needs correcting. Iris makes sure the second amendment reflects both changes.
