Moved to Florida this year? You may not be done with your old state.

Other-State Tax Returns for Clearwater Residents

Florida has no personal income tax, but the state you came from may still want a return. Iris prepares part-year and nonresident returns for new Clearwater residents, snowbirds and remote workers so you pay each state only what it's owed. Call 678-614-4636.

Who needs another state's return

  • Movers. If you moved to Florida during the year, your former state taxes income earned while you lived there.
  • Remote workers. Some states tax remote employees of companies based there. New York is the best-known example.
  • Rental owners. Rent from property in another state is usually taxed by that state.
  • Snowbirds. Northern states may claim you as a resident if you spend enough days there or keep strong ties. Your Florida declaration of domicile, driver license, voter registration and homestead exemption help show where home is.

A typical example

An illustrative example, not a client testimonial. A couple moves from Rochester, New York, to Clearwater in June after retiring. Iris prepares their federal return plus a New York part-year resident return covering January through June.

She allocates his pension payments and their brokerage income by date, claims back New York tax withheld after the move, and helps them start a simple residency file with their Florida driver licenses, voter registration and homestead exemption.

Proving Florida residency

States audit people who move to Florida, especially retirees with large pensions or investment income. Iris helps you keep a simple residency file: date of move, Florida driver license and vehicle registration, voter registration, homestead exemption, and a record of days spent in each state.

It costs nothing and can save a long argument later. More services are on our tax preparation page.

How it works

  1. Call 678-614-4636 and tell Iris what kind of return you have. She'll tell you what to gather and quote the price.
  2. Iris comes to your home or business, reviews your documents with you and asks about anything that changed this year.
  3. She prepares the return, walks you through the result, and e-files after you approve and sign. You keep a copy.

What it costs

Each additional state return is [state return price], added to your federal return price.

Iris's promises to you

Inviting someone into your home or business takes trust. Here is what Iris promises every client:

  • You know the price before she starts. No surprise fees at the end.
  • Your documents never leave your sight. She scans what she needs at your table, works on an encrypted laptop and hands your originals back before she leaves.
  • Every line is explained in your language. Plain English or Spanish, so you know exactly what you signed.
  • No waiting room, ever. She comes to your home or business at the time you choose, Monday to Saturday from 8 to 6.
  • If the IRS writes later, she reads it with you. The same woman-owned business that did the work answers the follow-up.

Questions people ask before they call

I moved to Clearwater in June. Do I owe my old state?

Usually you file a part-year return there for January through June income. Income earned after you became a Florida resident is generally not taxed by your old state.

My old state withheld tax after I moved. Can I get it back?

Often, yes. A nonresident or part-year return claims the overpaid withholding.

Does Florida tax my pension or Social Security?

No. Florida has no personal income tax.

What is a declaration of domicile?

A sworn statement filed with the Clerk of the Circuit Court in your Florida county saying Florida is your permanent home. It supports your residency.

Can you prepare any state's return?

Iris prepares returns for most states. Ask when you call: [confirm states Iris prepares].

Do I need a state return for a rental property up north?

Usually yes. Most states tax rent from property located there, even if you live in Florida.

Will my old state audit me for moving?

Some states review high-income movers. A clear residency file and correct part-year returns make that review short.
