Prior-Year and Late Tax Returns in Clearwater

Unfiled years weigh on you. Every month adds worry, and possibly penalties. The good news: catching up is usually simpler than people fear, and some find refunds waiting. Iris helps you get current, one year at a time, without judgment. Call 678-614-4636.

How catching up works

  1. Find out what the IRS has. Iris helps you pull wage and income transcripts from your IRS online account, which list the W-2s and 1099s reported for each year.
  2. Prepare each year. Each return uses that year's forms, rates and credits. Iris prepares them at your table and explains the result for each.
  3. File and plan. Recent years can be e-filed; older years are signed and mailed. If there's a balance, she helps you look at payment options.

A typical example

An illustrative example, not a client testimonial. A Clearwater handyman hasn't filed for three years after a divorce. He's afraid to open his mail. Iris sits with him at his kitchen table, helps him pull wage and income transcripts from his IRS online account, and prepares the three missing years.

Two years show refunds from withholding on a part-time job; the third shows a small balance. The refunds offset most of what he owes, and the rest goes on a short-term payment plan. For the first time in years, he's current.

Don't leave a refund behind

If you were owed a refund, you generally have three years from the original due date to claim it. After that, the money stays with the Treasury.

People who skipped filing because they "didn't make enough" are often the ones owed money from withholding or the Earned Income Tax Credit. Iris checks the oldest eligible year first. See more on our tax preparation page.

If the IRS already sent letters

Bring every letter. If the IRS filed a substitute return for you, it usually ignored your deductions and credits, and filing your own return often lowers the balance a lot. Iris will tell you which letters are urgent.

What it costs

Prior-year returns are priced per year: [prior-year price per return]. Multi-year catch-ups get a package price quoted up front.

Iris's promises to you

Inviting someone into your home or business takes trust. Here is what Iris promises every client:

  • You know the price before she starts. No surprise fees at the end.
  • Your documents never leave your sight. She scans what she needs at your table, works on an encrypted laptop and hands your originals back before she leaves.
  • Every line is explained in your language. Plain English or Spanish, so you know exactly what you signed.
  • No waiting room, ever. She comes to your home or business at the time you choose, Monday to Saturday from 8 to 6.
  • If the IRS writes later, she reads it with you. The same woman-owned business that did the work answers the follow-up.

Questions people ask before they call

I lost my W-2s from three years ago. What now?

You can get the information from an IRS wage and income transcript. Iris helps you request it.

Will I go to jail for not filing?

Criminal cases are rare and involve deliberate fraud. For most people, the IRS wants the returns filed and the balance resolved. Filing voluntarily is the best step you can take.

How many years back should I file?

The IRS generally expects the last six years for people who are behind, but every case is different. Iris reviews your situation and IRS records first.

Can old returns be e-filed?

The IRS accepts e-filed returns for the current year and a limited number of recent years. Older returns are printed for you to sign and mail.

Do penalties stop once I file?

The failure-to-file penalty stops growing once the return is filed. Interest and late-payment penalties continue on any unpaid balance until it is paid.

Can I get my old refund if I file now?

If the original due date was within the last three years, usually yes. Older refunds are generally lost, but filing those years still matters for your record and Social Security credit.

Do you judge people who are behind?

Never. Life happens: illness, divorce, a lost job, a death in the family. Iris's job is to get you current, not to lecture.
