What families should know first

  • The signer must be aware and willing. A notary must believe the signer understands the document and isn't being pressured. Iris talks with the signer directly before notarizing.
  • Medication and timing matter. Plan the visit for the time of day your loved one is most alert. Nurses can often suggest the best window.
  • ID can be an issue. Hospital patients sometimes don't have their ID with them. Ask family to bring it, or ask Iris about the identification options Florida allows.
  • Some documents need witnesses. Powers of attorney and many other Florida documents need two. Facility staff may or may not be allowed to serve; ask in advance.

A typical example

An illustrative example, not a client testimonial. A Clearwater assisted living community has four residents who need documents notarized for their families. The social worker calls Iris and schedules a signing morning.

Iris meets each resident privately in the library, confirms each person understands the document, and notarizes powers of attorney and a health care surrogate designation, with family members serving as witnesses. Families who live out of state join by phone.

Working with facilities

Iris confirms visiting hours, check-in procedures and any health screening before arriving. She can see several residents in one trip, which helps families and communities that schedule signing days. Social workers and case managers are welcome to call her directly. See our notary public in Clearwater page for more.

What to have ready

  • The complete, unsigned document
  • The signer's photo ID
  • Witnesses, if required
  • The room number and the facility contact for check-in

How it works

  1. Call 678-614-4636. Tell Iris what the document is, how many people are signing, where they are and whether witnesses are needed. She quotes the total.
  2. Iris arrives at the home, office, hospital room or care community at the agreed time with her seal and journal.
  3. She checks each signer's ID, confirms they understand and are signing willingly, watches them sign, and completes the notarial certificate.

Questions people ask before they call

Can you notarize for someone with memory loss?

Only if, at the time of signing, the signer understands what they're signing and is acting willingly. If Iris can't be confident of that, she must decline, which protects your family member.

Do you come in the evening?

Hours are Monday to Saturday, 8 to 6. Ask about urgent situations: [after-hours policy].

What does it cost?

$10 per notarial act under Florida law, plus a travel fee: [travel area and any travel fee].

Can several residents be notarized in one visit?

Yes. Communities can schedule a signing day, and each resident is seen privately.

Can a nurse be a witness?

That depends on the facility's policy. Many don't allow staff to witness. Plan for family or friends to serve.

What if the signer doesn't have a current ID?

Florida allows a notary to identify a signer through certain credible witnesses under oath. Tell Iris in advance so she can explain the requirements.
